# IRA

Also known as Individual Retirement Account. A self-directed retirement plan for individuals with earned income and their nonworking spouses. Maximum contributions are up to $5,000 annually. IRAs permit investment through intermediaries such as mutual funds, insurance companies, banks, and securities firms.
