Specialist

A member, but not an employee of the New York Stock Exchange who has two primary functions. First, to maintain an orderly market, insofar as reasonably practicable, in the stocks in which that person is registered as a specialist. Second, the specialist acts as a broker’s broker and maintains an order book of stop and limit orders. Specialists are also allowed to trade for their own account.
